Abstract
Integration of remote sensing and spatial metrics is an effective method to study of urban change. The process of urbanization in Hanoi was compared with them in sensing and spatial metrics. Hartford, Nagoya, and Shanghai. The research results have shown that the spatial metrics could reflect characteristics of the city the development over time. In the newly urbanized time in Hanoi, new transportation routes and apartment buildings were planned very close to existing urban areas and they are about 10 km away from the city centre. This is considerably closer than the new urban areas of Hartford and Shanghai, which were located on the out-skirts of existing urban areas, 20 km and 40 km from the city center, respectively. The development of new urban areas far from the main city center not only attracts people to the suburbs, but also increases potential for the long-term develop-ment. The land use planning of each city is an important factor to derive the urban growth in the future. Integration of remote sensing and spatial metrics to study the relationship between urban planning and urbanization is expected to provide valuable information that can be used to better understand the impacts of urban planning policies in urban areas, particularly in Hanoi
